Today the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s ruled to block the Fair Share Amendment from being on the ballot in November. It’s a decision that’s as devastating as it is enraging. Here’s my statement in response:
“The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s decision to block the Fair Share Amendment is a major setback to making the Commonwealth’s tax code more fair. But the fight isn’t over.
“The Fair Share Amendment proposed a modest tax on millionaires that would have generated approximately $1.9 billion a year. The funds are needed for our schools, our roads, our bridges, and other critical infrastructure projects.
“With the loss of legislative leadership and clout in our Senate district and throughout Western Massachusetts, this decision hits us here at home even harder. Our region has always had to fight harder for a return on our public taxes in the form of state spending for our roads and bridges and other critical programs. With less funds to allocate, we will need to make especially sure that Western Massachusetts gets its fair share.
“As State Senator, I will be ready on day one to be a strong advocate to ensure the Commonwealth’s wealthiest individuals and corporations pay their fair share, and that our tax dollars come back home to meet our communities’ needs.”
